In 1912, the Lozi people were subjects of the British protectorate of Barotseland, which was administered by the British South Africa Company (BSAC). The Lozi paramount king, or Litunga, was Lewanika, who had reigned since 1878. Political context British rule: Lewanika had requested protectorate status from Queen Victoria, though the territory was ultimately acquired by the BSAC under Cecil Rhodes. Lewanika later felt he had been deceived by the arrangement, as the BSAC defaulted on its promises
